I have dissociative identity disorder. My partner, and caregiver, took me to the hospital ED. I was triaged efficiently but my anxiety level was 12/10 and my partner was aware I was dissociating. When taken to a short stay bay, the health professionals began to gather data by asking questions etc. My partner told me when I was coherent after dissociating that the nurses refused my partner answering important questions regarding my health history e.g. allergies, why I came to hospital etc. Stating, I need the patient to answer these questions on their own, when I clearly was unable to. Why on earth would someone I trust and knows me well, misinform nurses and doctors about what I am allergic to or what my medical history was?
My partner is now typing up a spread sheet regarding all my medical history, allergies, medications etc. so in the event I have to return to hospital and I dissociate, the nurses can read it and be informed rather than my partner being rudely told to not to inform them on my health.
Not only this but I obviously was unable to support myself emotionally and in the event I had to stay overnight, my partner, and caregiver, was told they were not allowed to stay. In comparison to a second opinion at another Eastern Health facility, they happily accommodated for my dissociative identity disorder and allowed my partner to sleep next to me on a couch as it was important for my mental health.
Another issue is their lack of attentiveness to pain management. No matter how many times my partner told the nurses I was in pain, I was given nothing stronger than Panadol or Nurofen. And this was given after being called into a short stay bay. When I was clearly in pain in the waiting room, crying, curled up on 2 chairs with a heat pack.
I suggest performance reviews of the nurses and doctors are a good way to rectify this for people who have to attend.
I really hope no one has to have these experiences.
