"Continual noise"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital

(as the patient),

After being transferred to Wonthaggi Hospital for a stroke, eventually, I was taken to the High Dependency Unit overnight including the following night too. The noise in this unit is very loud. Doctors walk in talking loud and the door slams shut, with a bang. The same on the way out. I asked if I could be transferred to a bed elsewhere, the Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) said, we have no beds but I can send you back to sleep in the Emergency Department. Seriously! It sounded like I was being offered a punishment fo speaking up. I contemplated checking out and going home but with the stroke and all that, they offered to drug me out.

May I make a suggestion please, fix the High Dependency Unit (HDU) entry door, and tell all staff and doctors to respect patients trying to sleep please.

P.s the ED staff are fantastic.

Dear echoqz76,

Firstly please accept my apologies for our infrastructure - we absolutely recognise that our current ED surroundings are not contemporary and we are very pleased to have received a government commitment of 115M to build a new Emergency precinct that will not have the noise and space issues that our current ED has. Our ED Director has also spoken to our Facilities Director today and we will be trying some adjustments to the doors and the locks to reduce the noise of the doors opening and closing; we have also reminded all our staff to reduce noise overnight wherever possible. If we were building in an ideal environment, we wouldn't put our only staff area into a clinical space like we have had to at Wonthaggi but we have converted almost every space to maximise the beds available.

I hope that your are recovering well and yes - I agree! Our ED staff are fantastic!

All the best. Jan.

Dear echoqz76,

Our very wonderful Facilities team have adjusted the door and it is much quieter! Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I am sure it will be helpful to future patients!

Kind Regards

Jan
