"Remarkable and extraordinary patient journey at SCGH"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a carer),

Sorry this is not an ideal start - my family had to go through a lot of trauma due to my wife's ill health. She was wrongly diagnosed at a different health service. Long story short, she had an infected breast abscess and it was quite nasty when we rushed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) Emergency Department (ED) recently.

It's always an unpleasant experience when your family is sick and the last thing you want is to end up in ED. However, I have a totally different and a pleasant patient experience to share here.

We rushed to SCGH ED recently and in less than 15 minutes we were triaged and were seen by Andy/Jason from ED Green Team. The required blood tests were done and the Green Team engaged the specialist Dr David in the Assessment Area. We are so grateful to the kind hearted specialist who examined my wife and took her straight to the sonographer who did a very careful and detailed ultra sound to assess the infection site. Post the detailed ultra sound, specialist David engaged the Breast Surgeons and Dr Jason rushed to examine my wife to assess the infection. He educated us about how bad the infection is and informed us that Consultant Allen’s team would be doing the surgery immediately. My wife was in theatres in less than 45 minutes and that's a remarkable team effort by the ED crew in optimum patient care.

Special thanks to Allen and team who did a very careful incision/drainage of breast abscess. Post recovery my wife was welcomed to the Short Stay Unit and was given special care by the nurse Suzanne. Suzanne was kind hearted and an absolute angel who motivated my wife and shared lovely stories to keep her smiling.

My wife was moved to a different ward and was cared for by nurses Holly, Kylie and Emma and the care was the best we could have asked for. Jason and Allen made sure my wife was recovering well and answered all our questions with warmth and kindness.

We appreciate the services of Father Thomas, the chaplain, who gave us divine strength on the road to my wife's recovery. Also a special mention to Shaji from catering services who looked after the dietary requirements and meals during my wife's stay at SCGH. I can sit and write for the whole day about how supreme the patient journey was at SCGH. I recommend SCGH as one of the best for quality patient care in Australia.

Thanks to the whole team, SCGH you're great.

Dear likeablek64,

Thank you for taking the time to share your appreciation of all the staff involved in your care during your time at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. We aim to treat all patients with kindness, respect and dignity and your feedback is valued by us all.

It is good to hear that you experienced excellent support from the doctors, nurses and radiology teams involved in your wife’s care during your presentation at the Emergency Department and that she was transferred so quickly to have the necessary surgery. The surgical team, staff in the Short Stay Unit and other teams involved in your wife’s patients journey will appreciate knowing that their care made such a positive impact on you and your family during her hospitalisation.

I will share your compliment with all the teams you have mentioned and ask that the individuals named by you are notified that their care and attention was appreciated.

Once again my sincere thanks for taking the time to provide such positive feedback about the teams here at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Kind regards

Janet Zagari
