"Not being informed of triage categorisation in ED"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

I went to the Emergency Department (ED) in Sydney Eye Hospital due to the sudden pain in the eyes starting in the morning. I was seen by the triage nurse and was told to wait outside to be called by the doctor. After 3 hours’ waiting, I asked the nurse how many people are there in front of me? The nurse told me the patient with the most severe problem gets to be seen by the doctor first (which I absolutely agree) and I am catergorized as level 4 which is non-emergent case and I can go to see an optometrist instead, but I can also choose to keep waiting.

What an exciting news after 3 hours’ waiting? Wouldn’t it be better if you can tell me earlier about my situation so that I do not need to worry so much about it and can save my time instead of wasting 3 hours to get nothing done?

People come to Emergency because they worry about their health and seek help, not because they want to be lectured by the correct platitudes. I would like to know the reason for not disclosing the patient’s information when they are waiting at ED.

Dear corvussp47,

Thank you, your feedback is a valuable reminder as to what our patients would like to hear from us when presenting to the Emergency Department. We respect that our patients have other commitments and time is a precious commodity.

Your experience has been discussed with the Nurse Unit Manager of the department who relayed that it is expected practice for the triage nurse to discuss with the patient the current expected wait times and other options such as being reviewed by an Optometrist. I apologise this did not occur at the time of your visit to the Emergency Department and your feedback will be further discussed with the triage nurses.

Kind regards

Barbara
