The staff were so kind and helpful and I would go back to that hospital anytime if I had to. I just wish we didn't have to travel so far for major surgery and would like to be able to have it at this hospital as it is so nice and clean.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Kerang District Health.

You make a couple of really interesting points. One about accessing major surgery, and the other about cleanliness.

Small health services like us do not provide major surgery because of a number of things- having a suitably qualified surgeon and anaesthetist support available, having the nursing and allied health staff skilled to support the surgery, having the post-surgery care staff, and having the right tools and equipment and environment are some of the things to consider.

I would explain it as having the right workshop and the right people to work in the workshop are all factors in a health service's capability. All health services strive to provide safe care and quality care, and in doing this they have to carefully asses what services they can realistically provide to the people in the community and give an account of that.

Kerang provides minor to moderate surgical procedures on certain days. We work closely with our Doctors and Regional health services, so if it is appropriate for you to transfer back to Kerang after major surgery to be closer to home, we try to help make this happen.

Cleanliness in health services is measured and monitored, not only by what looks clean but also by the number of infections that are "caught" during a hospital visit (hospital-acquired infections). This includes hand hygiene - staff and visitors washing their hands, it includes clinical staff using good techniques for dressings, and it is also about cleaning staff making sure the rooms and hospitals are clean.

Thank you for observing a clean environment, and making such a nice comment. Our staff all work hard to ensure the service meets its targets with regards "cleanliness".
