I was admitted to a hospital with a suspected stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) approximately two months ago. After being assessed by the Doctor on-call, they decided to transfer me to Bunbury Regional Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) by ambulance for scans and tests.
On arrival at ED I was assessed and then told to walk through to outpatients and speak to the Triage nurse. I sat in the waiting room for over 3 hours and was finally seen later that evening by a junior doctor who examined me. I was then directed to a room in ED, and sent for CT scan and X-ray during the evening.
At around 5 am I was then transferred to another hospital as they were now aware I had private cover. The next morning I went for an MRI scan. This scan showed that I had a stroke.
I have since been made aware that there is a set pathway for suspected stroke victims. Bunbury Regional Hospital ED certainly did not follow this pathway.
