"Issues with surgery appointment"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Skin Conditions and Skin Cancer (Dermatology) Clinic

(as the patient),

After waiting months I had an appointment a recently with the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH)  Dermatology to investigate a skin cancer which is spreading. At this meeting with the specialist and supervisor, it was concluded that I would be admitted later for an operation to have the cancer removed.

I recently phoned up to see why there had been no notification or contact made with me since that original appointment to arrange the operation. I was told by the Dermatology Reception Desk that the only record was that I was listed for a biopsy but no date had been arranged. This is despite the arrangement discussed with the specialist at my appointment.

In the meantime, the open weeping cancer is continually spreading. I have now received two letters with the same information stating that I have an appointment for a minor biopsy later this year, despite earlier arrangements in which I should already have had a full operation as arranged at my original appointment.

This is stressful and I am fed up of being, what I feel is, lied to, victimised, and racially discriminated against.

Dear fedup,

I’m sorry for your experience and what seems to have been a miscommunication regarding your treatment. The type of procedure that you describe is typically not performed in theatre but done in the dermatology outpatient clinic where a biopsy will be taken to determine the best course of treatment. If this involves the removal of the lesion then a time will be booked for this to occur. However, it is very concerning that the condition of your wound is deteriorating as you describe and we would like to ensure you get appropriate and timely treatment for it.

Our Outpatient Clerical Coordinator would like to assist you by discussing your treatment with you directly. So that we can put you in contact with her, can I ask you to please call our Consumer Engagement Unit on 9224 1637 and speak with one of our team, who will be waiting for your call.

Again, I apologise that this has been a stressful experience for you.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Lesley Bennett
