"Appalling food standards"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital

(as the patient),

I’ve been a patient in this hospital for over a week, and even though I have private health insurance, due to my care needs that apparently could not be supported in the private hospital, I was transferred three days ago to a public hospital Community Care Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital.

During my short time here, my heart health has improved however the nutritional content and standard of food that I have been served certainly has not contributed to my recovery.  Whilst I don’t expect top restaurant-standard meals, the mush that I have been served is not edible and my family have had to bring me food to consume so that I didn’t need to add malnourishment or starvation to my medical symptoms. I feel I’ve had better food in a local hospital in China!

Are you aware of these appalling food standards? I have pictures of the food to prove it if you don’t believe me.

Whilst I’m fortunate to have people who can bring me external food I’m sure that there are many patients in this hospital who don’t. In my opinion, this needs to be improved.

Dear likeablehb58,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding the quality of the food that you received during your stay at the Prince of Wales Hospital. We recognise that eating and drinking well whilst you are in hospital is important for your health and recovery. Our menu meets the standards required for hospitals with respect to the range of foods and providing adequate nutrition. However, we apologise that our meals were unsatisfactory.

We appreciate you contacting us so that we can address the quality of our meals and also do more to ensure that patients are able to give feedback during their stay to rectify issues in a more timely manner. We will be discussing your complaint further to identify actions to improve this important aspect of patient care.

Thank you again for providing this valuable feedback.

Regards,

Diane Williams
