"The birth of my fourth child."

About: Bunbury Hospital

(as the patient),

I had a successful water birth in Bunbury Regional hospital. I felt happy and well informed and well supported by my midwife. I felt the care was very good.

I was a little nervous at the beginning of my pregnancy because all my previous children were born in New Zealand. A place where your primary carer during pregnancy is from a midwife and not an obstetrician. So I went with MGP a service I felt I was more used to. Similar to New Zealand.

If I could change anything I would probably encourage a longer stay in hospital for mums after birth. I feel 4 hours is not enough. Yeah I was fine, but I feel that others would benefit from a longer stay with longer monitoring and support.

With all my previous births I was able to stay for up to a week in hospital which I found extremely beneficial. Even if my births were low risk and very straight forward (no tearing or epidural or caesarean), I believe mums need to recoup and rest with support, whether it be breastfeeding support or just to have someone fix a healthy meal.

Apart from that I was extremely happy with my midwife. Best in Bunbury

Dear telescopiumqh88,

Congratulations of the recent birth of your child and I hope you are settling into what I can only imagine must be a busy household with 4 children.

I am extremely grateful that you took the time to provide feedback about our service on Patient Opinion. I am pleased to read that your experience with our Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) team was a positive one. The team strive to ensure that you are informed of your choices and empowered to be in control of your pregnancy and birth.

I can understand that remaining longer in hospital following birth can have its benefits. The short length of stay of four hours is a key part of the MGP model, thereby maintaining the continuity of care with your MGP midwife. MGP does provide longer postnatal support, up to 4 weeks in comparison to a longer inpatient stay in the hospital model. It is this longer duration of postnatal care and support in the home that is also of great benefit to mums and offsets the early discharge.

Please feel free to contact me via our Customer Liaison Officer on 9722 1521 if you have any further information or feedback you wish to provide about the service.

Thanks again for posting on Patient Opinion and I wish you well with your growing family.

Thankyou, with kind regards,

Katrina Jones
