"Surgery for my child"

About: Bunbury Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

We recently came into Bunbury Hospital early morning, and filled out the initial paperwork from the nurse. Even past lunch time we were still waiting to go into theatre. My child had been fasting since the night before and hadn't had a drink since very early in the morning. Apparently the surgeon list had adults first and I was informed by a nurse and the anaesthetist that children are usually first in line. We were then advised that we would not be put through to theatre until after lunchtime. I could have given my child breakfast. Not happy at all.

“Dear reticulummz95,

Thank you for posting your experience and concerns regarding the length of time your child fasted for their procedure. I apologise to you and your child. It is not acceptable for a child to wait for such a long time.

It is evident from your advice that the communication regarding surgery and time frames was lacking. Improved communication would have enabled a discussion regarding the fasting and perhaps an alternate plan for care.

Your feedback enables us to look closely at our systems and implement change to improve. At all times we endeavour to ensure that children who have fasted are prioritised to have surgery at the beginning of the theatre list. I am unsure why this did not occur.

As such, I would appreciate it if you could give me a call on 0447 793 904 so that we can discuss what occurred in detail.

In the meantime, I have raised your concern with the surgical services teams and asked that attention be paid to children fasting for surgery. With more detailed discussion, I will be able to investigate and provide you with a more thorough explanation related to your child’s care along with improvements planned/made.

Thank you sincerely for sharing your experience.
