"My child was well cared for"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Emergency Department

Recently, around night time, my child presented to Sutherland Hospital A&E. They had been seen by the National Home doctor team 25mins prior who recommended the admission. The triage nurse listened and ensured that my child's symptoms were assessed and recorded. As they were in pain with their throat, swollen glands, tarchycardic, dehydrated and febrile they were given immediate medical attention and the plan from the home doctor was followed precisely. Promptly the nurse cannulated my child, commenced IV fluids, steriods, pain relief and was closely monitored overnight. My child was transferred to the short stay unit for further observation and a medical review. 

As a health professional myself I felt confident that my child's condition was being well managed. I felt reassured that staff were listening to them and providing the care in a compassionate, skilled and prompt manner. I felt able to leave them there knowing they were in the best place to receive excellent nursing and medical care

When I returned early the next morning I found my child looking pale, exhausted but comfortable in my opinion. Every part of their admission and treatment was discussed with my child and myself as their parent. I felt respected and included and given my professional background my child wanted that reassurance. I was particularly impressed by the clinical handover that occurred at regular intervals between VMO, registrar, nurses, my child and myself. Everyone was kept informed of the management and discharge plan.
