"Discharged without procedure"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as a volunteer/advocate),

My attention has been drawn to the circumstances of an individual who went to FSH recently for a procedure involving, as I understand it, a hole in the heart.

I believe they arrived at the hospital for the procedure recently and was told the procedure would not happen that day as arranged as it had been a busy day but would happen the next day.

They had the operation towards the end of the week but subsequently suffered a coronary arrest requiring CPR and was advised by the doctor that they would not be permitted to return home until a pacemaker had been inserted. The next morning they received a visit from another doctor of the same gender who told them, somewhat abruptly I am advised, the pacemaker procedure would not be happening and that they should go home and await advice as to when it could be performed. I believe they felt, in light of what had happened, less than comforted living some 300km away from the hospital they could get appropriate help if anything went wrong.

Dear Advocate Chairperson,

Thank you for your feedback in relation to a patient that was ‘discharged without procedure’. I apologise if the patient’s experience was not as they had expected and that they felt the advice given from the doctor was done so abruptly.

Without further details in relation to this patient, I am not able to investigate the reason the procedure was not carried out or when it is likely to be completed.

I would encourage the patient concerned to contact our Patient Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 with further details so we have an opportunity to look into this situation.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
