"Treatment of staff"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented at the Emergency Department (ED) approx. midnight recently with severe chest pain as a result of radiation and chemo treatment for cancer, which I had persevered with for 24 hours.

I felt ED was not overly busy as even the staff commented. After tests it was decided to admit me to a private ward 3A a few hours after midnight. As I had little sleep and was still in pain all I wanted to do was sleep. The ED staff were perplexed, in my opinion, when told from upstairs that they were waiting on beds as the ED staff believed the hospital wasn't that busy. There were the usual number of noisy patients and from experience EDs aren't the best places for rest.

I was moved to 3A around 6am going past many empty rooms.

On my second day and feeling much better I questioned the staff on how come there was a shortage of beds with so many empty rooms, I was told that it was management speaking for patient to nurse ratio.

Apparently I was the third patient in 3A that morning so I hope you can see why I am writing this story as all I wanted in my condition was sleep and ED isn't the place for that.

If you look at my file it will show I have had many hospital stays in the past 8 years including 4 in yours, and 1 of 6 months duration. I will never knock the WA medical system, it is brilliantly staffed by great and caring people.

I have spent the last several years running predominantly service industry businesses and for the life of me cannot understand why a great hospital filled with dedicated and caring staff be let down, in my opinion, by management with such trivial rules or is HR running a muck again?

I would appreciate a reply to this story.
