"Post Surgery Review"

About: Box Hill Hospital

(as the patient),

I was brought in to the Box Hill Hospital a few months ago suffering from complete renal failure. I spent several days in ICU and then was operated on. Post-Op I stayed another few days and then was released. I was well cared for by the staff during this time although a nurse on floor 8 tried to make me share a room with a patient of another gender which I felt was completely unacceptable.

Fast forward to a few weeks later when I received a letter to come back into the hospital on a certain date for (I have since found out) a post-surgery review. I arrived for the appointment 25 minutes early and was seated to the right-hand side of the waiting room as you walk in.

I waited an hour patiently as the hospital doesn't revolve around me when an administrative staff member came over and told me I had been put on the wrong list as I was actually there to see the dietitian. So I was moved to the left-hand side of the waiting room and told that I was next in to see the dietitian given that I had been waiting an hour already.

I waited another hour and told the administrative staff member I couldn't wait any longer to see the dietitian. To be fair, I was angry because I had a list of questions I wanted to ask and concerns I wanted to raise with the Surgeon and I thought that was more important than talking to the dietitian.

The administrative staff member again confirmed that I had been put on the wrong list and that I was there to see the dietitian and that I was next in to see them. I couldn't wait any longer and left.

I received a message from the dietician a few days later explaining who they were and that they were hoping to have seen me when I came in for my post-surgery review with my surgeon.

I have since rung the hospital to find out who I was meant to see as I would have thought that Box Hill Hospital had a duty of care to follow up post-surgery. One staff member told me to go to my GP (which was, in my opinion, particularly unhelpful) if I was concern about the wound.

I spoke to another staff member who confirmed that I was meant to see the surgeon and offered to rebook the appointment.

Again, I stress that I understand that I am one of thousands of people treated by the hospital each year. What I don't understand is what is happening with the duty of care with post-op patients and why, in my opinion, the administrative staff members took it upon themselves to send me to the wrong specialists?
