"Lack of assistance with travel for dental care"

About: Patient Assisted Travel Scheme - WACHS Pilbara

(as the patient),

I have to go to Perth to see Oral Maxillofacial specialist to get wisdom tooth removal as causing headaches, sinus infections etc. I will be in Perth for 3 nights as I have to go in for day surgery at the hospital after a consult and have an extra day for 3D scans so the surgeon knows where nerve and sinus are impacted when removing tooth.

PATS have declined helping with flights as it is dental and I feel they don’t seem to care that I can’t have it done in Karratha. Lucky we can afford the, in my opinion, overpriced flights and will be eating beans on toast with all the unexpected cost to get a service I can’t receive in Karratha. I feel for the people that can’t afford to fly and have to live with pain and discomfort. I’m not getting it done because it’s cosmetic or just needs to be done! It’s causing me great pain and needs to be removed.

I feel living remote can be such a disadvantage in so many ways and this tops it off with us being hundreds of dollars out of pocket for flights on top of medical bills. I feel very let down and upset.

Dear thubanfm45,

I am very sorry to hear about your recent experience regarding the lack of PATS assistance and the distress this has obviously caused you. Please be assured that all dental requests are reviewed by a medical practitioner to ensure that the request meets the criteria for PATS assistance. Unfortunately, it would appear that your condition did not meet this criteria, with the information provided at the time.

I will be reviewing this matter to determine if there is any assistance we can provide. We will be contacting you shortly to gather some information from yourself and your specialist, so we can reassess your application.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. If you have any further queries or concern, please get in touch with us on 9174 1040 or at WACHS-Pilbara.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Yvonne Bagwell
