"Management of a missed miscarriage"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Antenatal Clinic, Birth Suite, Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, Wards 3B, 3C, 3D, 3DO, Visiting Midwife Service

(as the patient),

I’ve been seeing Fiona Stanley for management of a missed miscarriage for the last month. First visit I believe I waited 2 hours in the gynaecology clinic for a booked appointment around mid-morning. Then had 2 subsequent appointments and I have had 2 doses of misoprostol 1 week apart with no success, and then I was booked in recently and spent 11 hours in day surgery waiting for a dilation and curettage (d&c) that never happened.

As you can imagine I’m already distressed enough having to go through this then to be fasted for 23 hours and to be made to wait 11 hours is, I feel, unbelievable. At no point in booking this in with the gynaecology clinic was I told it was not a booked procedure and I would be going on the emergency surgery list as mine was not an elective surgery that could have a definite surgery slot. This was all told to me after 8 hours of waiting in day surgery recently. It’s been a month, I’ve been emotionally and physically dealing with this miscarriage and looks like I’ll have another week or so of this ordeal left.

The gynaecologist saw me late in the afternoon to explain they would not be doing this 15-minute procedure that day, suggested booking through private so I’ll be calling around everyone to see who I can get in with first. I feel very disappointed by the public system. I believe I will not be going back to Fiona Stanley.

Dear equuleusbb35,

I am sincerely sorry to hear about your recent miscarriage and I thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

I am sorry that our teams did not adequately explain the treatment process and timeline and I am sure this added to an already difficult situation.

I am aware that miscarriage can be managed medically or surgically and the medical management can take up to weeks. I am sorry that you were discharged without the appropriate counselling and an agreed plan of care.

We would like the opportunity to discuss and review your care with you personally and further identify areas where we could do better for future patients.

I would encourage you to contact the Fiona Stanley Hospital Patient & Family Liaison service on 6152 4013 so we can look into all the circumstances surrounding your case.

Once again I am very sorry for your experience at this difficult and sad time.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
