My child has been diagnosed with Scoliosis in 2017 at Karratha Outpatients Clinic where they had an initial and follow-up appointment.
We then moved to Broome and had a follow-up appointment at the Broome Health Campus.
At the time of these appointments, neither the Broome or Karratha Health Campuses had a child's spinal specialist on their books. I believe that if we had been referred to a children Scoliosis specialist at the time, my child wouldn’t have been in the situation they are in today with 47deg Cobb angle in their upper spine and 25deg Cobb angle on their lower spine.
We have been residing in regional WA for over 12 years and we are grateful for having the opportunity to see specialists locally instead of flying to Perth. However, I wish the specialists coming to regional areas would understand the variety of needs the regional area has and come prepared with appropriate resources and knowledge to give the best medical advice.
My child is now in the care of an Orthopaedic Specialist in Perth but because of their age and spine curvature, we might have to go down on the fusion spinal surgery path. I am hoping the person in charge will read this message and will take the appropriate decision.
