"Parking and Food"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Aged Care Assessment Team, Geriatric Medicine & Ward 6D

(as a relative),

My very elderly parent was admitted to Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) after a bad fall. They were found in the Emergency Department (ED) to have gashed their head and had 2 rib fractures on CT Scan.

My parent was discharged back to the nursing home three days later, around lunchtime, on panadol only. Sent back to FSH early hours of the next day as my parent was extremely distressed and agitated.  The doctor in the ED put them on IV Fluids and gave IV antibiotics as the doctor felt my parent may be getting a chest infection and was quite dehydrated. This doctor was excellent in my opinion.

So far I personally have racked up quite a bit of money in car parking and this will continue to increase until they are discharged. Together with other members of the family, this would now be a couple of hundred dollars. I can not for the life of me not understand the cost of parking at our showcase public hospital and our other public hospitals. Especially on the weekend. If you leave and come back on the same day it then becomes extremely expensive.

Secondly, the food. What has been served to my parent I wouldn't give a dog to eat. I know they were on a soft diet but please why does it have to look like in my opinion, someone has vomited it up and put it on a plate.

Thirdly, the doctor on the ward had told us my parent had no rib fractures, but this was not the case.

Dear fornaxgz66,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and provide your feedback via Patient Opinion.

I am sorry to read of your parent’s experience and the need to be re-admitted to hospital for further treatment.

I appreciate the positive feedback regarding the care provided by the doctor in the Emergency Department. It is difficult to comment on the information provided to you by the doctor on the ward regarding rib fractures without your parent’s details. If you would like this to be investigated please contact the Patient and Family Liaison Services on 6152 4013 so that we are able to undertake a more thorough review of your parent’s care and address the concerns that you have raised.

Regarding parking costs and food at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Our Patient Catering team provide nutritious and quality meals, however, we understand food is subjective, particularly where people have special dietary requirements. All meals provided meet strict food safety guidelines and nutritional standards for adult inpatients in WA hospitals, and food preparation is overseen by our senior chefs. We encourage patients or their family members to raise matters like this at the time, so that our Patient Catering staff may be able to provide an alternate meal.

I am also sorry about your frustrations relating to the cost of parking at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH). Car parks and fees at the hospital are managed in accordance with the WA Metropolitan Access and Parking Scheme, which are guidelines set by the State Government. The Strategy was developed to ensure that people most needing to access a public hospital by car are able to do so. FSH parking rates are consistent with this strategy. In situations of financial hardship or extenuating circumstances, patients can ask to speak to a welfare officer about parking assistance.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
