"Hospital experience"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was admitted to St George Emergency Department (ED) recently and stayed there for approx 5 hours. I had interaction with 5 nurses, 1 doctor, 1 medical student, 1 wards person and  1 radiology staff member.

In my opinion, issues from my eyes:

- Nobody seemed to bother to wash their hands before touching me.

- I believe the blood pressure cuff wasn't cleaned before and after the use while at ED SSU.

- At ED, 1 nurse didn't bother to introduce themselves and I felt they were rude/rough - as if they were handling an object, not a person.

- A call bell wasn't given to me during my entire stay.

I hope my experience would help to reflect on your practice and hence improve service delivery.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was very concerned to read of your recent experience in our Emergency Department. What you have described is not the standard of care we aim to provide at St George Hospital and I am very sorry that this was your experience.

I can assure you that we take infection control very seriously and your feedback about hand hygiene and lack of equipment cleaning is very disappointing. I can assure you that your feedback will be passed on to the Director of ED and this will be addressed with all staff.

I am sorry that you felt you were treated as an object and not as a person, this must have been very upsetting for you. I will ensure that all staff in the ED are made aware of your feedback.

I really appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback as this allows us to look more closely at our processes and practices and make the necessary improvements.
