Re: Emergency Heart Surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
I am writing to you in response to my recent unexpected open-heart surgery at SCGH.
During a planned routine ablation, my heart wall was inadvertently punctured and I needed full open-heart surgery to save me. I realise now, how serious the situation was, very dire to the point where the surgical staff had to work very hard to save me. I am aware that I arrested during the operation and required numerous transfusions. I went to sleep expecting to recover after a routine procedure only to wake in intensive care after 5 days in a coma.
Rather than being too upset that the procedure went wrong, I needed to write to you today to formally thank you for my life and highlight the skill and dedication of the doctors and nursing teams involved.
I would particularly like to highlight a number of staff members:
•Surgical – Dr James. A fantastic and compassionate doctor, in my opinion, who sees the patient and not just the surgery. A fantastic individual.
•ICU – Sandra
•HDU – Justine, Sally, Sinead and Deb
I have no doubt that I owe these people my life. Understandably, the 2 or 3 days just after ICU were immensely challenging during which time I consciously considered preparing for the end. However, I was overwhelmed by the nurse’s dedication to duty, care and compassion. They literally gave me hope; maintained my dignity when I was unable to clean myself, managing my pain, encouraging me forward at every opportunity.
In light of this work, particularly in the shadow of the COVID-19 outbreak, I wanted to make sure that these members of staff were formally thanked and commended by the hospital for their dedication to service and their continued efforts. I truly believe that the majority of the public see these people as national heroes. Can you please ensure that they receive an appropriate commendation?
I can only hope that the hospital will do everything that it can to protect its' most important asset that it has during the COVID-19 outbreak, the hospital staff.
