"The tremendous efforts of our health workers and carers"

About: Australia

(as a service user),

To all of our dearest doctors and nurses, in what is truly one of our most testing times.

My heart goes out to all of you. Your service to humanity, there is no way to fully repay. You pick us up when we're down, and try your damnedest to help us recover when we may well have been at the brink of our lives.

And all this on seemingly a daily basis.

The government may make a show of thanking you all for your service. But, in my opinion, after neutering the funding for our healthcare and leaving so many of you worked so thin and left with so much less equipment than you need… a truly backhanded thanks.

That's why I feel it important that you are given the thanks you deserve, from every member of the public you serve.

Just a few years past, I remember being huddled in a small meeting room, speaking to a heart surgeon the night before he was preparing to operate on my mum. I do apologise to him for not remembering his name. Some details stick less than others in these situations.

Unfortunately, my mum was not in a good way at the time. Having golden staph around the heart, fracturing away causing stokes and a bad case of pneumonia. It was not sugar-coated to us and he laid out what he'd planned to do, and what the possible complications and outcomes could be. And gave us his word he'd do all he could to the best of his ability.

What has stuck with me ever since that night though was my aunty wishing him a good night's rest. And us learning that he'd been going for around 16 hours that day alone.

I felt what I believe was the failure of the government, and us as a society that night. We ask so much from you, and in my opinion, do not give you the support you deserve back. And you all still do what you do.

My mother didn't pull through unfortunately. She was just too sick to recover. And the thought of so many people currently falling prey to this pandemic now. It's truly heartbreaking. But around the world, nurses and doctors are doing all they can despite this, being, I believe, under-equipped and being forced to make decisions that no-one should be asked to make in some situations.

For all of you who have dedicated your lives to the service of humility, I feel there is no thanks we can give that is adequate enough. But through the, what I feel is, lackadaisical government and the idiocy of certain parts of the public, there are those who respect your unbelievable efforts. And we wish you all the best.

Hopefully in the very near future, your services really do come to light to those who have taken you for granted. I believe you're some of the most selfless and damn hard-working people we have. And I damn well hope you're not all pushed back aside after all this work you're doing now.
