"Diabetic hospital food"

About: Albany Health Campus / Dietetics

(as a service user),

I’m currently a patient in a WA hospital. One of my diagnoses is diabetic ketoacidosis. Currently, I’m on a diet of ‘diabetic nourishing fluids’. I’ve been here nearly a week and every day I’ve been served a combination of jelly, yoghurt, orange juice, fortified orange juice, and sustagen. Many of these items have a no-sugar option but I’ve only been given the full sugar version. I’ve not yet been served a meal suitable for a diabetic. Recently one night, one of the many amazing nursing staff found me a diabetic jelly, so I know it’s available. What’s going on? Are the meal plans designed by a dietician?

Dear firepf67

Thank you for expressing your concerns about your recent stay at Albany Health Campus through Care Opinion. I am very sorry to learn that you were not provided with the diabetic nourishing fluid diet.

The dietitian team review and design meal plans to cater to all of our inpatient needs. Our processes for ensuring our inpatients receive the appropriate diet are normally robust. Regrettably, it seems that there has been a breakdown in communication in this instance and I sincerely apologise for this.

I have shared your feedback with our Allied Health Manager and Hotel Services Manager. Please be reassured that all staff and processes involved in the prescription to the provision of the meals have been addressed.

If you would like to speak with me directly about your experience you can contact me on 9845 8762 or email Alison.Johnson@health.wa.gov.au

Thank you again for contacting us through Care Opinion and thank you also for recognising our amazing nursing staff.

Kind regards,

Alison Johnson
