"Presented to ED in pain and turned away"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I was in pain with my shoulder and arm for a few days! I managed to get a Physio appt towards the end of the week and was told I had shown signs of frozen shoulder.

Over the next few days, I felt it didn’t improve, impacting my sleep etc. I was unable to dress myself, put my hair up, wash myself and was in quite a bit of pain. I presented to our local ED department hoping I would get a CT scan or ultrasound or X-ray to help diagnose the issue further so I believe my Physio and doctor knew what we were dealing with!

After my one hour wait, I was called in, asked to take a seat, asked what my problem was, and was told X-rays are dangerous, I said why's that, I’ve had plenty in the past? X-rays cause cancer! When I asked what they thought has caused my issue they quite simply said go to the gym, lose some weight! No need to see a specialist and why would you want surgery! I said I didn’t say I wanted surgery!

I then presented my MRI report and they just read it and said it had nothing to do with why I was there and it was coincidental. When asked what I could get for the pain it was nothing, just keep using what you have! All done in 10 minutes! Off you go! No temp check, no blood pressure check, I felt no compassion whatsoever! I felt I was looked upon as a time-waster! Meanwhile, all my symptoms showed I had a rotator cuff tear!

Dear juneeq39,

Thank you for sharing your comments and taking the time to write to us on Care Opinion about your experience at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus Emergency Department.

I would like to offer my sincere apologies for what happened and for how this has left you feeling. There are clearly things that we could have done much better. I would like to assure you that as a result of your feedback, I will take this opportunity to speak to our staff to remind them of the importance of listening to the people in our care and being compassionate, always.

I would like to learn more about your experience so that I can follow up with the team involved. If you are happy to do so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact David Bowdidge Operations Manager at Kalgoorlie Hospital on 9080 5817 or by emailing David.Bowdidge@health.wa.gov.au.

Once again, please accept my sincere apologies; I certainly understand how frustrating and disappointing your experience has been for you.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Tredinnick
