"Telehealth connecting for optimum patient care."

About: Bunbury Hospital Fiona Stanley Hospital / Haematology and Transfusion Medicine & Ward 7D St John of God Bunbury Hospital Telehealth Service - WACHS South West

(as a service user),

Last week, due to unexpected hospital admission for declining health care, a frail, aging and acutely unwell Bunbury Haematology patient was admitted to Bunbury Health Campus for assessment, then transfer to SJOG for Palliative Care planning and management.

Being hard of hearing, their caring spouse attended with them. Unfortunately, their children live away. COVID-19 travel restrictions and border closures made their connection in person, prohibitive.

Seen by treating specialist locally, Dr Sarah, they felt reassured. However, the family welcomed a Haematologist update and opinion to guide their understanding and family plans. Doing so, meant the beginning of a complex connection plan including multi-sites, specialists and technologies.

At very short notice, the South West Cancer Services team - Cancer Nurse Coordinators, worked with Telehealth South West team and manager Renae to strategise the connection. It included Bunbury Regional Hospital / St John of God Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital's Haematologist - Dr Dustin and Jacqui - Cancer Nurse Consultant, connecting one child from Perth and interstate Victoria to connect the other child.

It was a delicate and sensitive conversation being shared across many miles, through innovative technology allowing hearing and vision sharing thanks to the expertise of Renae at South West Telehealth.

The ability to bring this family together with Dr Dustin in real-time was most significant, enabling one of their last family opportunities together.

Dear gemininy93,

It was with sadness that I received the referral regarding this lovely gentleman’s palliative cancer diagnosis, compounded further by COVID19 travel restrictions prohibiting a personal face-to-face meeting.

I am very thankful for all the hard work on behalf of the Southwest Telehealth Services, Southwest Cancer Nurse Co-ordinators, Bunbury and St John of God Hospitals, along with the support and understanding of the patient and family in facilitating a video call bringing together family and caregivers from across the state and country.

I am glad that this provided the patient and their family with some comfort, support and closure during this challenging time.

I wish you all the best,

Dr Dustin Hall

Dear gemininy93,

Thank you for getting in contact to share the experience of using Telehealth to connect this family across Australia, with our clinical team members across country health and Perth.

I am very proud of the team that deliver cancer services who have done an outstanding job to adapt, prepare, up-skill and continue to provide essential care through this challenging period and I thank you for recognising their dedication in keeping families connected in our community.

Kind regards,

Cindy Stainton
