My elderly parent had to go to the Sydney Eye Hospital for an emergency surgery. I was shocked to hear that they were sitting in emergency alongside people getting tested for COVID 19 I believe.

My parent has heart problems and Type 2 Diabetes and has been making sure that they have not been in the community during this time to ensure they are not at risk of contracting the virus. I have no idea why the testing area was not separated from the general emergency department. I feel it was very distressing for elderly patients in particular, to be mixed in with others who had high temperatures thus qualifying for the test.

Dear grusqq35,

I am sorry to hear of your distress concerning your elderly parent within the Emergency Department. Your concern for your family is quite understandable. We also take the welfare of all of our patients very seriously, and have introduced a number of additional safeguards across our hospitals which have effectively mitigated the risk of infection. Across the state, COVID testing occurs in a number of areas, including all emergency departments, with stringent infection control procedures. Physical distancing is also in place in our emergency department. Please be assured that we have these and other measures in place to ensure the safety of our patients, family members, and staff.
