"Lack of doctors"

About: Nannup Hospital

(as a relative),

The Nannup hospital has no regular visiting Doctors. The local medical centre I believe is in control of the Nannup Hospital and, in my opinion, neglects the people of Nannup by not giving us a regular doctor.

The local paper states we have doctors four days a week. One doctor that was here for 2 months has moved to a neighbouring town, another doctor that I believe comes from Busselton cannot treat people in the ER as I believe they have the wrong regulations. Another doctor that was coming over here I believe got so busy elsewhere that they have no time to come here.

The other doctors either don't practice any more, don't like the drive over here (30 minutes bitumen road) or they are too busy in their own practice and in Manjimup. The one constant supposedly comes every Friday. I believe they come every second week if they have the time and then rushes back to Bridgetown without seeing any inpatients.

We have a doctor started up in the town but I believe has no clinic area, no pathology taking clinic and cannot visit the Nannup hospital. The in-patients at the Nannup Hospital I believe can go 3 weeks or more without a doctor seeing them. There are only 5 residents in the Hospital, all are aged.

The nurses do an absolutely wonderful job but they cannot be a doctor. If an inpatient needs a doctor they have to be taken into the ER and put through a Telehealth program.

Dear sagittariusfr46,

Thank you for your feedback and concerns you have raised in regard to frequency of Doctors visiting Nannup Hospital.

Currently patients, residents and staff at Nannup Hospital have on-call access to the doctors from Bridgetown Medical Centre twenty four hours each day. This service is also supported by an Emergency Telehealth service staffed by Emergency Medicine Physicians, an Inpatient Telehealth Service and a Mental Health Telehealth Service which assist in the management of patients and support staff. This means that we have access to health professionals trained in these specialities reviewing and directing care of our patients.

Thank you for also bringing to attention the information provided in the local paper. Unfortunately this information is misleading as it hasn’t been updated. We are now reviewing this and putting procedures in place to ensure that the information provided is accurate.

Once again thank you for your feedback. I would be happy to discuss this further with you and can be contacted on 0417 176 473.

Yours sincerely,

Jodie Omodei

Acting Operations Manager Inland
