"Staff attitude and treatment"

About: Joondalup Health Campus Joondalup Health Campus / Rehabilitation

(as a relative),

In my opinion, there is a particular staff member who is offensively impolite and seems to have no empathy or compassion for sick and terminally ill patients. When you ask them to leave your specialist a message in relation to your treatment, like asking for a script for nausea, they tell you to go visit your GP.

I feel their tone and bad attitude is completely unacceptable for any medical receptionist, especially if you are dealing with patients who are so ill from treatment and are already facing the prospect of death. I feel their reason of trying to relieve the specialist of pressure is an excuse and in my opinion, it's themselves because they can't be bothered.

No patient should be spoken to in such a manner and if they are so sick of their job then they need to move on, in my opinion. I feel this staff member doesn't have the skills to interact with terminally ill patients. Heaven forbid they get sick one day and (as I feel I have been) get treated like a piece of s***!

I feel the nurses in this department, however, are excellent and do such a wonderful job throughout their whole shift. Lovely ladies, unlike, in my opinion, 50% of the nurses I have had interactions within Private rehabilitation wards HO and LO. I believe the way they treat the elderly is appalling and they also need to gain some compassion and empathy.

I believe half of these nurses in HO and LO that I have dealt with need retraining.

I believe Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) needs to up its game and in my opinion, sort out some staff throughout your departments. It seems like all JHC cares about is their business stakeholders.

Can't speak highly enough of Dr Tiana from Geriatrics and nursing staff in Oncology. Wish we had more caring and empathetic angels like you in the hospital system at JHC.

Dear charaxj47,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on the Care Opinion Website. I am saddened to read that you had a negative experience with some of the staff on the wards that you highlighted in your patient story.

I would like to try to resolve this matter with you.

Can you please contact our Consumer Liaison Department on 08 9400 9672 so that one of our consumer liaison officers can discuss this further with you.

I would like to thank you for your praise of Dr Gooneratne and the staff on the Oncology Unit. I will ensure that your praise is passed on to the relevant staff.

Kind regards

Brendon Burns

Dear Mr Brendon Burns,

My Grandfather passed away in L0 recently while he was in palliative care. I am absolutely disgusted and appalled at the treatment of his comfort care in his final weeks and months. Even speaking with the consumer liaison team a few weeks prior to his passing I found that at least 50% of your nursing staff in L0 had not been efficient enough in managing his symptoms and distress from a holistic approach, dealing with the emotional, psychological and physical aspects of his palliative care. The older nurses were rude in tone to him and us as a family, I believe they didn't check on him often and left him to suffer in his final weeks of life. I am absolutely appalled in the treatment of my Grandfather and will not be recommending any person I know to the Palliative care team in L0 ever. I felt the reaction times of the nursing staff was appalling when he couldn't breathe and had an oxygen saturation level of 81%. I believe they yelled at him when he was confused, didn't care he was having panic attacks. If I wasn't there every night he would have suffered even more.

I would like to have a one on one meeting with you and not speak to the consumer liaison team as it all gets swept under the carpet. I feel absolutely sorry for any family that has to endure this treatment especially in a 1st world country like Australia and in 2020. I felt your staff lack empathy, compassion and emotional or intellectual /interpersonal intelligence. Imagine if this was your loved one being neglected. I turned up to the ward and my Grandad died within 7 minutes of me being in his room. At no time before he passed were our family called to say our Grandad and Dad was dying. I walked into the room and he had breathing and sounds consistent with the death rattle and he had a build up of brown secretions of his tongue. The nurses hadn't even cleaned him mouth or lips that day. They knew he was on a hydromorphone and midazolam syringe drive pump and left him to die alone. I feel your nursing staff need to gain some empathy and compassion of the terminally ill and in my opinion, need retraining.
