"Patient assistance to return home - Regional WA"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Acute Medical Unit, Wards 5A &5B, AMAC (Acute Medical Ambulatory Centre)

(as other),

A young to middle-aged person, whose family is known to my family was recently air-lifted to Fiona Stanley hospital (Perth) suffering acidosis. This life-threatening condition was correctly treated and resolved.

I believe they were discharged without warm clothing and without access to direct return travel to their home in Regional West Australia. I am unsure if they had or have their own cash to resolve any of these issues.

In the past, I believe funds were available to persons living far from Perth city to attend specialists. Has there ever been funding for people from the Regions to return home?

I believe the person was in tee-shirt, shorts and thongs in winter conditions. I am astonished a major hospital appears to not assist their return home.

Dear Concerned Acquaintance,

Thank you for getting in touch with us via Care Opinion to share your concerns about your acquaintance. I am glad to hear your acquaintance’s acidosis was treated and resolved by our team here at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Regarding the circumstances surrounding the discharge of your acquaintance, we are unable to provide specific details without a) details of your acquaintance, and b) consent from your acquaintance. If your acquaintance would like us to investigate the circumstances surrounding their discharge, we encourage them to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013, or via email at FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Regarding your query about funds available for persons living in country areas to access metro specialists or hospitals, there is the Patient Assisted Transport Scheme (PATS), operated by the WA Country Health Service, which provides financial assistance for eligible country residents to access their nearest clinically appropriate medical specialist. Further details about PATS can be found on their website: http://www.wacountry.health.wa.gov.au/index.php?id=pats

Thank you again for reaching out to us, and please pass on the details of Patient and Family Liaison to your acquaintance in case they are not already aware of those contact details.

Kind Regards,

Neil Doverty.
