"Care received in the Emergency Department"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I cut my fingers on corrugated iron. There was a lot of blood. I attended triage and Val was very helpful and welcoming. I was x-rayed and then Mark, Zada and Danny cleaned my fingers and completed the dressings. Thankfully, there was no nerve damage and they avoided stitches and steri-stripped and dressed my wounds for me.

I was disgusted with the language and in my opinion, rude behaviour of a person in the bed next to me. I can't believe what poor behaviour and verbal abuse staff put up with. I felt that Mark, Helen and the after-hours Manager, Cathy were so polite and professional dealing with this person. This person swore at them, refused to behave and then I believe exposed themselves to one of the staff.

I am so impressed with how the staff handled this disgraceful behaviour. I personally felt they should have been kicked out if they wouldn't behave decently.

The care I received was excellent and I am so grateful to everyone. Thank you to everyone who made my journey so easy.

I would be grateful if you could let the staff involved know how much I appreciated their care and their kindness and how impressed I was with their patience with the rude person in the bed next to me.

Dear marchgb98,

Your appreciation of the staff has been passed on to them and the Emergency Department team. The Emergency Department environment can be very challenging for staff and other patients at times and our staff are very skilled in dealing with those challenges as you witnessed. We are proud of their professionalism, compassion and care and they will be thrilled to hear that these have been acknowledged and appreciated.

All the best with the healing to your fingers.

Kind regards

Alan
