"Dying relative"

About: Royal Adelaide Hospital

(as a service user),

My relative was on ICU recently, their child was in touch with ICU and there was ongoing communication between them and ICU. The social worker (SW) was very helpful and they called up a couple of times to check on my relative's child which we are thankful for. They provided a letter to assist with access permit to travel.

In the evening when relative's child arrived to RAH they were advised that they could not see their father. When asked why ICU told us the evening social worker had called someone and the social worker told ICU that we could not visit.

Next day in the AM the consultant and the same SW worked hard to let us in to see our family and my relative's child, her father died. I felt we were declined to be with our loved one overnight due to the wrong information provided by that evening SW. As an Aboriginal person, I feel that our culture values were not valued. We missed to be at our brother's side.

This response has been published by Care Opinion, on behalf of Royal Adelaide Hospital:

Dear ‘septembermy38’,

I am very sorry to hear of your poor experience when your relative was recently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

We are working hard to ensure clear consistent processes are in place for families travelling from interstate to visit their families who are in ICU during this pandemic period. We do not want to have family members being prevented from seeing their relative or their loved one. Clear communication is really important for our patients, families and to us and is central to our commitment to provide quality care.

We encourage you to contact the Consumer Adviser at the RAH on (08) 7074 1377 or email at rah.consumeradviser@sa.gov.au so we can speak with you to learn from you experience and improve our process.

Once again, I am sorry for you and your family’s experience.

Regards,

Liz
