"Emergency Department"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My spouse was admitted via Ambulance following a fall when out walking. They had dislocated their shoulder. They were treated within 3 hours of the incident and their care was thorough and respectful. I was involved in clinical conversations and decision making.

We both felt respected and cared for by dedicated medical and nursing staff.

My spouse was kept in overnight and referred to a specialist and subsequently had surgery 4 days later to replace the shoulder joint.

My only negative comment about the care we received was that there seemed to be little evidence of handwashing and COVID precautions at the hospital. Especially noted at the time and reinforced when my spouse then spent 3 days in a private hospital where I believe it was given a high priority.

Dear emptysea,

Thank you for your kind words about the care and treatment provided to your spouse at Royal Perth Hospital. I am so pleased to hear you both felt respected and cared for by our dedicated medical and nursing staff following your spouse’s accident. It is always lovely to hear when staff have left such a positive impression. I have ensured your thanks have been passed on to all the staff involved in your spouse’s care.

I am however concerned to hear that you did not see adequate evidence of COVID hygiene precautions. I can confirm RPBG has a separate and dedicated Emergency Department area for patients presenting with COVID suspect symptoms and the organisation continues to stay COVID prepared. I am also very sorry you saw little evidence of handwashing. Like all health care institutions, we take hand hygiene very seriously, and would like to reassure you that our staff strive to maintain hand hygiene at all times utilising alcohol-based hand gel as per hospital policy.

I hope your spouse is recovering well.

Kind Regards

Joel Gurr
