Recently, I arrived at the PathWest Rockingham clinic first thing in the morning. I get there early before it opens because there is always quite a queue of people. This visit, I was first in line, and by the time the staff member opened the door 10 minutes after the open time, there were 10 people waiting.
There was only one person working there who spent the first 30 minutes taking forms from the continuous stream of people waiting for their blood test.
Eventually, 20 minutes later, another staff member came to help, and blood started to be taken, but by now there were 35-40 people waiting, in various states of distress at the delay, I believe as most people were fasting and had other appointments to get to.
I finally had my blood taken. This is not the first time my wait has been an hour or more, and I need to have these blood tests every month. I have tried going on different days to see if that makes a difference, it does not, it's always busy.
The two staff members this visit were both as professional and cheerful as they could manage, but it was still a very stressful situation and I know that this is not simply a one-off occurrence, but rather a reflection of how very understaffed the clinic is.
I do hope that management gets to read this and make some positive changes to the staffing levels, as those poor staff members I believe are having to make up for the shortages until they too are sick from the stress. Please fix this situation urgently.
