"Hip replacement"

About: Albany Health Campus / Operating Theatre Albany Health Campus / Recovery Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward Allied Health (Primary Health - Albany)

(as the patient),

Everything went well and for the most part, felt I was being well looked after.

Booking staff on telephone were efficient and competent in my opinion.

Pre-op appointment efficient and informative, however, I was not advised that the appointment would take nearly 2 hours until I arrived and I had to change other plans.

Appointments

Appointments

Arriving for the op and preparing for op very friendly, kept me informed. I felt the process was very efficient with the opportunity to ask any questions with surgeon and anaesthetist and they kept me advised about the delay due to an emergency. Excellent.

Theatre staff were excellent (I had a spinal block) I was comfortable, confident in the staff and well informed of the procedures. Post operative ward staff very friendly and kept me informed.

Surgical ward staff very attentive for the 24 hours post-op, physio very encouraging and supportive.

After the second day I felt a little neglected, after the catheter was removed I was almost left to get on with it, go to the toilet, shower, dress etc. These were hard to do but I managed - not sure if I was safe in the bathroom though.

Small things like staff not realising that you are not allowed to bend right down and couldn't put socks on or pick up things from the floor - just the little things that the staff seemed to forget/not know I believe.

Discharge efficient and friendly, once they got organised - which took a while.

All together I would like to say that I was very happy with my experience at the hospital and for me (first time in 40 years in a hospital) it was a positive experience.

Very loud TVs - disturbing! I felt the food was not very appetising.

Dear snowch65,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about Albany Health Campus. It was great to read that overall you had a positive experience.

Thank you for highlighting the need for staff to identify the potential increased length of initial appointments. We will endeavour to ensure future clients are informed of the length of consultations so that they can plan accordingly.

Whilst staff aim to support our patients to a speedy recovery and progression to independence, we never want our patients to feel neglected.

Most hip replacement patients are ready for discharge three days after surgery, once they have been deemed safe to move about unaided. Some patients may require increased support from family or services at home and our staff will facilitate referrals to community providers, where appropriate. Different hip replacements have different precautions, however, staff should be able to identify this and put the relevant precautions into place.

Our Allied Health Team review this with all patients pre-operatively and provide them with an information booklet. We have shared your feedback with the relevant staff and managers and we will ensure hip precaution information is available to all concerned.

I have also shared your feedback with Raelene Tape, Hotel Services Coordinator, who would welcome specific feedback on where improvements could be made to make the food more appetising. Please feel free to contact Raelene on 9892 8239. Our food is regularly quality tested to ensure we provide healthy, nutritious meals and we encourage members of the community to participate in these food tastings. If this is something you would be interested in please contact Alison Johnson, Senior Dietitian on 9845 8762.

Alternatively, if you would like to speak with me specifically about your experience, please feel free to call me. You can contact me on 9892 2647.

Thank you again for taking the time and effort to share your experience with us.

Kind regards,

Juan Clark
