"Disabled Bathrooms"

About: St George Hospital / Nuclear Medicine

(as a carer),

I accompanied one of my residents from the nursing home I work at to an appointment at St George Hospital.

The appointment and then X-ray were fine.

I was appalled when I took my very elderly resident in their wheelchair to 2 different disabled toilets. In my opinion, the size of the toilets was ridiculous! I couldn't even fit the wheelchair into the toilets.

We arrived at the hospital in the morning for the appointment and left with our community transport three hours later. My resident had to wait till we got back to the nursing home at nearly four hours after our appointment time just to go to the toilet. It was very distressing for them.

Dear beidkk54,

Thank you for your feedback about the disabled toilet access at St George Hospital. I was very concerned to read that you encountered difficulties in assisting your resident to the disabled toilet. I would like to offer my apologies for the distress this caused you and the resident in your care.

I can assure you that we have wheelchair accessible toilets available to patients or visitors in wheelchairs. Our maintenance department will conduct a review of our disabled bathrooms to ensure that they meet the required specifications. Additionally, I will ensure that radiology staff are made aware of where patients in wheelchairs can access the most suitable bathrooms.

I like to ask you to make contact with our Patient Experience Manager on 9113 2687 to discuss this further. It is important that we cater for the needs of those in our community.

Yours sincerely

Paul Darcy
