I was diagnosed with Late Onset Pompe Disease (a degenerative muscle disease) in mid 2018. Treatment for this condition (Enzyme Replacement Therapy) required me to travel to Perth - 1600km from Karratha - fortnightly as it was not available any closer to home. This entailed a two-day round trip. Since then my support team in Perth and Karratha were working hard behind the scenes to make the treatment available in Karratha.
Nine months after my first infusion in Perth, I was able to attend the Karratha Health Campus to start receiving my treatment locally. This has been a godsend! I have four young children at home and having to travel to Perth for two days every fortnight did not make life very easy for my spouse.
Now, the hospital is 5 minutes from home and I am back home before the kids finish school. Thankfully, there hasn’t been any real problems receiving the treatment in Karratha... the staff in the Outpatient Ward are amazing and are very accommodating with any requests I may have.
In my opinion, the whole team at KHC are very professional and easy to communicate with. I am lucky to have such a dedicated team of health professionals looking after me!
Thanks guys and girls!
