"The best help by Ebony"

About: Community Nursing (Bass Coast Health)

(as the patient),

I had a Supra catheter put in for incontinence (after 4 bowel operations in the last 3 years, after which the bowel still is not working correctly). The hospital I had the surgery in did not arrange any help when I came home, and I was unable to get any at the time as it was during a holiday period; it was a very trying time.

Then came Ebony, a Urology nurse from BCH, who was so caring and did not treat you like you were old which I feel so many people do. Just because you are elderly, your outlook could be young which is a good thing. She patiently showed me everything, arranged all of my needs and took the time, it made such a difference a great experience.

Why is it when we older citizens, in my opinion, have an operation and are not completely followed up by the surgeon and it seems as though they do the op and no explanations are necessary in some care services? I rode a bike 3 years ago when I came from another state. No explanation as to what has happened, why I now need a walker and am incontinent and I still need to follow up on my bowel with a new opinion. This is my body and I believe even though we are of older age should be told details done to us. (I was shown a few times how to empty the catheter in hospital but the first few days at home alone were daunting).

Anyway, a big thank you to Ebony.

Dear conditionerdp86,

This was one of the most touching posts I have read for a while. Mainly because I know how tricky/embarrassing the issue of continence is; and because I also know how ageist some people can be.

I couldn't be more proud of Ebony and our Continence team for the professional, compassionate and expert response they provide. I rang Ebony before I posted my response, to tell her that there is nothing more important as a nurse, or as a BCH staff member, than what she has done with you, to make you feel so comforted and supported. Thank you for taking the time to remind Ebony and all of us about the things that matter.

I would be very happy to talk to you about the discharge from the hospital (I hope it wasn't us) to make sure they also get some feedback and think about how to improve. If you would like to do this, please call me on 0472 846 355.

Kind Regards,

Jan
