Being pregnant for the first time I had no idea what to expect of a public healthcare system in Australia. I heard many mixed opinions of my friends, many of whom were using private insurance to ensure they received best comprehensive care while pregnant and delivering their child.
I was assigned to Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) of King Edward Hospital as my pregnancy was deemed low risk.
To my surprise and delight, I was matched by a skilled, professional, young and friendly midwife Caitlin, who was in charge of my prenatal care and promised she will be there for me also in the delivery room. I was also introduced to Hayley and Delaney, two other midwives working in the same MGP 5 group and they became familiar with my case in an event Caitlin was unavailable so I would still be seeing a familiar face at my appointments.
Best part of being cared for by MPG was the really friendly approach. I had mobile numbers to my midwives and felt I can always message them. They were very accomodating and even provided me with a tour of the hospital birthing suites to make me more comfortable about the upcoming birth.
The prenatal classes organised by MGP were also fantastic and very informative. My husband was allowed to attend online as he was away for work at the time.
My birthing experience was a very positive one, I felt respected at every stage and encouraged to cooperate. Midwives at KEMH communicated well with me every step of the way which made me feel empowered and confident during this new experience.
The added benefit of being with the MPG group were the daily visits they provided after the birth of my baby. Both Caitlin and Delaney visited me at home to ensure we are settling well and help with the initial concerns.
I was sad to be discharged from their care and hope to have the exact same positive experience with the MPG team when I have my second child in the future!
