I had suffered with drug addiction from the age of 18 until early 20s. I used drugs as an escape from my everyday life as I was in a domestic violence relationship and using made me numb to the mental side of the abuse and made the physical abuse not hurt as much at the time. I had a period of almost 3 years that I was drug-free, I turned back to drugs when my kids' other parent and I split cause they took our 2 kids and wouldn't allow me any kind of contact again it was a way of feeling nothing cause I couldn't cope with what was going on in my life.
I linked in with lives lived well in Woolloongabba, QLD in 2020 and successfully completed the 3-week day program they offer. I found it to be an amazing experience and felt supported the entire way through. Dani was so helpful in finding new ways to cope and deal with my addiction and recovery process. I cannot thank her enough for the constant support and commitment with not just my recovery process but also giving me support and strategies to deal with my ongoing mental health issues as I found I was at one of the lowest points in my life. I was also going through court in attempts to get access to my two very young children while I was taking part in the day program and I feel that having the 3 group counselling sessions a week plus daily check-ins was a massive help and support that was needed.
