"Need help for my child"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

We presented to Geraldton regional ER as my young adult child is very ill and has been for over a year, weighs 46kgs, can't eat is nauseated all the time, has several cysts in their brain found 3 months ago and one is apparently in their nasal passage with a drip.

Recently my child started taking a medication the GP prescribed that has made them dizzy with a headache and blurred vision. So we went to the ER and was seen by a doctor who did not even actually examine my child, all they did was ask for my child's history, and then suggested they had an eating disorder. I did react to this statement protectively as this is continuously suggested by our GP and my child feels no one believes them. My child is in tears a lot of the time, hungry unable to eat...

The doctor continued to talk about going to the GP for a referral to see a psych... They said there was nothing they could do to fix a year-old problem and we should go to GP and go through correct channels and get a referral for a psychologist.

In my opinion, the doctor was rude and arrogant. I am disgusted that my child is treated this way. They have suffered for so long and it was so hard to get them to even go to the emergency after they nearly fainted that day and they can't see properly.

The doctor didn't even examine them ... so we are now home with nowhere else to go to see a dr... How do we actually get someone to help my child?

Dear centaurusfx56,

Thank you for writing with your concerns about the care your adult child received from the Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department. The care described is troubling and not reflective of the person-centred care we strive to provide and I am sorry that you have experienced our service in this way and apologise for the distress this has caused you and your family.

The WA Country Health Service Midwest aims to provide accessible, safe, high-quality care for everyone and no one should feel that they can’t attend the emergency department and receive appropriate medical care and advice. Please know that your child is welcome to present to our service at any time and I would like to support this in any way convenient to you both. My name is Derek Fraser and I am the Operations Manager at Geraldton Hospital. If you would like to discuss how I can support you please contact me on 9956 2369 or email at derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au. Justine, our Customer Liaison Officer is also available to speak to you and can be contacted on 9956 2386 or Justine.Randall@health.wa.gov.au.

I would like to assure you that any call or email would be very welcome and that we take your feedback seriously and are committed to improving the experience of all health consumers.

I would also like to take this opportunity to let you know that we have a process in place for patients and their families and carers to escalate any concerns they might have about the healthcare they are receiving. The Call and Respond Early (CARE) call process enables people to request urgent assistance when they are concerned about their health and feel that their healthcare team has not fully recognised their changing health condition. When a CARE Call is made, a senior staff member listens to the concerns of the person making the CARE Call and makes a full assessment of the patient’s situation. The senior staff member then liaises with the treating medical team and other health care providers as required. The CARE call phone number is 1800 316 729 and if you would like further information about CARE Call, please visit the WACHS Website at http://www.wacountry.health.wa.gov.au/index.php?id=970

I hope to hear from you soon to ensure we can better support you and your adult child in meeting their health needs.

Kind regards,

Derek Fraser
