"Emergency department treatment"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Had friendly respectful service from the triage nurse, didn't have to wait long as it was a lockdown weekend.

Didn't have to wait long until I was seen by the doctor, who ordered IV antibiotics for my cellulitis in the lower leg, left! It was given without delay and I was almost ready to go home. I still didn't know the names of any of the staff. I was taught that's one of the first things you do to build rapport. There was a lot of laughing going on enjoying themselves obviously, then the nurse looking after me said I would be able to go home with antibiotics. Good I thought, until the doctor said they didn't know if they were the best, I believe they weren't.

A few days later I was at my GP getting stronger ones to take in conjunction with them. Back to Ed, the nurse said if I had any further problems I should come back and get my leg chopped off. They lowered their voice when he said that too. I thanked them for caring for me, is that professional? what happened to treating others as you would like to be treated.

Dear indigoej83,

Thank you for sharing your care experience following your interaction with staff in our Bunbury Emergency Department. I can see from your feedback that there were positives during your care journey but it’s the negatives that concern me and I wish to start by apologising.

I agree with you, starting a conversation by introducing yourself is so important and unprofessional comments are never welcome in our department, whether in jest or not. It is also essential that patient treatment plans are communicated clearly at all times in partnerships with our patients and consumers.

I’d like to reassure you that we are focusing on improving the care experience in the Emergency Department. It is vital that we learn from your experience and changes have been made, including communication to staff regarding expected standards of communication. Thank you again for taking the time to comment on Care Opinion. Should you wish to discuss your case any further please do not hesitate to make contact with me via the Customer Liaison Office on (08) 9722 1521

Kind regards,

Dr Adam Coulson

Director of Emergency Medicine
