"Unnecessary treatment whilst waiting"

About: St George Hospital / Intensive Care Services

(as other),

Poor signage at the hospital in my opinion. I thought I was in a public space waiting for a family member who is visiting our relative in the hospital. I totally understand and appreciate the 2 visitors per patient rule so I was waiting outside ICU to greet my partner who was inside to discuss our relative's condition.

The ICU receptionist confronted me (I didn't even ask for entry) questioned if I work here. I told them no. They then told me I cannot be at the (public) lobby as it is part of the ward. I tried to apologise to say, I'm sorry I didn't know, where can I wait? I felt they kept interrupting me and just kept repeating that I can't be there and that I need to go.

Seriously? I had such a good experience when our relative was first treated in the acute care department before being transferred, but I feel this experience just changed our perception of St George Hospital.

Dear julyfp68,

I was very disappointed to read of your recent experience and I would like to apologise for this unpleasant interaction. I have asked the department manager to remind their staff of respectful communication and appropriate behaviour. I will also make sure that the signage in this area is reviewed and updated if needed.

I do thank you for taking the time to let me know of your experience and I value your feedback. It is through feedback such as yours that we can make the necessary improvements to the service we provide.

I do hope that further interaction you may have with our service are more in line with the high standards of care we aim to deliver.

I would be happy to discuss this further if you would like and ask you to contact our Patient Experience Manager on 9113 2687 or via email to SESLHD-STG-ConsumerFeedback@health.nsw.gov.au.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Darcy
