"Waiting time for fasting blood test"

About: PathWest Albany Collection Centre

(as the patient),

I got to the hospital before opening time on a weekend morning. I am a type 1 diabetic who was doing a fasting blood test. When I arrived the first two number tags were already taken and the patients were not there.

When the staff arrived the other two people arrived and proceeded to be processed. I believe neither was doing a fasting blood test and one person was a staff member. I waited patiently but these two people were seen first. I didn't say anything at the time not wanting to cause a commotion.

I find it firstly unfair that people can take the number tags and leave the area to go and, I believe, buy coffee then come back and expect to keep their spot while someone else who has travelled into town 15 minutes, fasted since 8pm the night prior and then have to wait their turn while the others, in my opinion, blatantly flaunt that they work there. I think it was apparent as they wore their swipe cards.

Dear romeoyj87,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

I am sorry that your experience visiting PathWest Albany was not as you expected, I understand waiting for fasting blood tests can be difficult.

The number tag system generally works quite well and I assure you that staff are not prioritised in the phlebotomy queue, however they are required to wear their security passes at all times.

Once a number tag is selected patients are free to leave the waiting area, unless they are specifically asked to remain for clinical observation. If they have not returned when their number is called the collector will call the next number in the queue.

Please contact me with any concerns you may still hold.

Kind regards,
