"Mental health"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

One night recently I took my partner to the hospital Ed as they were suicidal and self harming. When we got there my partner spoke to the clinican and in my opinion my partner was made to feel like they did something wrong. In my opinion the staff don’t have any idea how to speak or treat someone with a mental health condition.

Dear guideyb93,

Thank you for taking the time to share the experience of your partner’s recent attendance at Kalgoorlie Hospital. All of our patients deserve to receive compassionate and person-centred care and so I was very disappointed to read your story and to learn about how your partner was made to feel. We know that to improve the experience of people who access mental health services we need to build an environment that is safe and non-judgemental and I’m very sorry that your partner was made to feel as though they had done something wrong when they presented to the Emergency Department (ED) for assistance.

Going forward, the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is committed to implementing the principles of trauma-informed care throughout the organisation and our WACHS Mental Health Team is currently developing a plan to do this; which will include training to all employees to support implementation.

In the meantime, I would like the opportunity to discuss your and your partner’s experience with you. Can I ask you to consider contacting David Bowdidge, Operations Manager, on 9080 5817 and provide more details so we can thoroughly investigate what occurred?

Again, I apologise for your experience and would genuinely appreciate the opportunity to work with you further to improve the care we provide.

Kind Regards

Peter Tredinnick
