"Not a well run hospital any more"

About: Sutherland Hospital / RCCP

(as a service user),

I received an urgent phone call from my GP, I have been battling a sinus and chest infection for a few weeks. I was told I should present to the hospital as my white blood cell count was extremely high. When I presented to the hospital I informed the triage nurse of what my GP had told me. I also told her I was short of breath and having trouble stopping coughing, I was told they would take another blood test and then I would see a doctor.

After 2 hours I have still not had the blood test. I was sitting there with a mask on as required. However, others in the waiting room are not wearing masks as directed at the entrance. This is a hospital, what about the COVID rules here. I have been informed the wait could be 3.5 hours. I feel this seems madness when I could possibly be infected with COVID-19, not impressed at all, sitting there having trouble breathing.

Dear eatercf59,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding your experience in our Emergency Department (ED). During times of high demand in emergency departments, there will, unfortunately, be waiting times longer than we would like. ED staff are guided by the Australasian Triage system which identifies the urgency of treatment in ED’s. I apologise for your distress in waiting two hours without receiving your blood test.

The hospital has staff members screening visitors at the entrance to the Emergency Department and front and back entrances of our hospital. This is in accordance with NSW Health advice. The Emergency Department also has a Patient Experience Officer who provides masks for patients and visitors. However, because masks are not mandatory in shops and public places currently, staff will provide a mask on arrival to ED and encourage patients and relatives to wear them, however this is not mandated. I was pleased to hear that you were wearing your mask which would serve as protection for yourself and others.

Our aim is to provide a high standard of care at Sutherland Hospital and I regret that the care provided to you did not meet your expectations on this occasion.

With kind regards

Vicki Weeden

General Manager
