"Returning to get an x-ray"

About: Carnarvon Hospital

(as the patient),

I returned to have an x-ray as my chiropractor could not see from the first x-ray what they had asked for. As I was about to leave, I was told by the radiographer that if I was not so overweight that they would be able to get a clearer picture and that I should go and see a real doctor anyway as a chiropractor is not a real doctor and they don't know how to fix my problem anyway. They went on and on for about 5 minutes as I was trying to leave. I felt so upset, depressed and ashamed when I got home. I also could not believe how a so-called professional was also putting down and saying how a chiropractor was not a real profession. I really hope I do not have to go back again as I would not feel very comfortable to do so.

Hi Upspy57,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your experience at Carnarvon Hospital when getting an x-ray. The WA Country Health Service recognises the importance of respectful conversations about body weight and personal choices about health care and I am sorry that you felt judged during your appointment. I have discussed your story with our staff in medical imaging and they have asked me to pass on their sincere apologies that you left the appointment feeling upset and depressed.

All staff are expected to demonstrate our value of compassion when engaging with consumers and I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns with you further and learn from your feedback so that other consumers do not have similar experiences. If you would like to do this you can contact me on phone 9941 0300 or email grant.patrick@health.wa.gov.au. Any contact would be welcome and valued.

Once again I am sorry that you have had this negative experience with our service. I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Grant Patrick

Acting Operations Manager Carnarvon Hospital
