"How wonderful the midwifery program is"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I had the most wonderful experience with the king eddies midwifery program. I was teamed up with midwife Maddi and I think she saved my mental health.

During my third trimester my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer and was given weeks to live. My baby was also being monitored for her size as she was so small.

Each time I went into the hospital for an ultrasound or doctors appointment Maddi would be present and ask me how I’m coping. The fact that I had the same person to go to made me feel secure and like I was going to see a friend. I didn’t have to pretend everything was ok as I would with a stranger if I saw a different midwife each week.

With Maddi I could be honest and talk it over with her. She is such a beautiful soul I knew she really cared and I feel that she made me stronger.

I didn’t fall to pieces every time I saw her but I felt comfortable that if I did she would help put me back together.

The birth was so lovely too especially because I again, was able to have the same midwife present and my husband knew her based on the catch-ups I would have with each appointment to report back to him.

It made the birth experience the next best thing to having a baby at home. I imagine women would want that so their surroundings are familiar, I felt this familiarity at king eddies.

I don’t think I would have made it through my final trimester and birth so strongly without Maddi as my midwife and being a part of that program.

Dear tigergs93,

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your new baby! Thank you so much for taking this time to provide us with feedback on your recent experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS).

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about your mother. It is a relief to hear that Maddi provided you with the support you required during this difficult, emotional time. I am so proud to hear that our staff go above and beyond to to help our patients to achieve positive outcomes during the pregnancy and birthing journey. The Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model of care has made a difference in the care we are able to provide to our patients and it is lovely to hear that you were able to get the support you needed.

WNHS would certainly like to expand the MGP service for our families in the future as our numbers grow so that more women in the community can access care from the same small group of midwives for the duration of their pregnancy, labour and birth and in the postnatal period.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide feedback. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
