"Midwifery group program"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I was lucky enough to be part of the Midwifery Group Program and I can’t speak highly enough about this service. My midwife Katy went way above and beyond. We had a bit of a shaky start with our baby and having Katy as a consistent midwife made all the difference. I really strongly believe everyone would benefit from being able to see the same midwife before, during and after birth. Katy is approachable, professional, caring and excellent at her job.

I had to stay for one night and I do feel as though I slipped through the gap as I didn’t see Katy in that time. I left hospital without establishing breastfeeding and my baby had to be re-admitted the next day with weight loss and jaundice. This was a distressing experience and I felt could have been avoided if we had more support to establish breastfeeding before we left.

Dear snowew96,

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby. I appreciate the time you have taken to write to us about your recent experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS) Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) and to raise your concerns around your overnight stay.

I am extremely sorry to hear that your overnight hospital stay caused you distress. WNHS strives to always provide quality, patient centred care and I would like to apologise that this was not your experience with our service. I am disappointed to read that you feel you did not receive the support you needed in order to establish breastfeeding. I would like to reassure you that your feedback on your experience has been communicated to the staff involved and that feedback such as yours is used to improve our services.

Thank you for the positive review you provided about the MGP. We would certainly like to expand the MGP service for our families in the future as our numbers grow so that more women in the community can access care from the same small group of midwives for the duration of their pregnancy, labour and birth and in the postnatal period.

Once again, thank you for providing your feedback. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards

Jodi Graham
