"Lack of FODMAP diet awareness"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Perioperative Services/Theatre/Operating Theatres

(as a service user),

In late 2019 I went in to SJOG Midland with diverticulitis. I have to follow a FODMAP diet and told the Dietician arranging my food there that I could not eat garlic or onion.

They did not seem to be aware of the FODMAP diet but took down in detail what I could not eat. After several days of fasting, I was allowed a liquid diet. It seems the clear soup contained either garlic or onion and two days later, like clockwork, I got diarrhea that went on for while.

It was then assumed that I had gastro and all health professionals had to gown up to attend to me for the next two days. It was actually a FODMAP intolerance as I know those attacks well. After that, I tried to have my own food as I felt I could not trust what I was given. But there was nowhere for me to store food and it basically was not allowed so every meal was a worry for me.

I do hope that in future the hospital understands FODMAP requirements. Otherwise, if I have to go back in I will get friends to bring food to me.

Hello cheetahyz68,

Thank you for letting us know about your experience during your admission in 2019.

I was sorry to learn that your FODMAP dietary requirements were not met during your stay. Your concerns were forwarded to our Nutrition and Dietetics Manager for review and she has advised that, as FODMAP is very individualised, she would be happy to discuss your concerns with you directly should you wish to do so.

We can also provide some information in relation to your concerns about why our staff wore gowns and gloves whilst they excluded gastro-enteritis during your admission. We look forward to hearing from you and our Patient Experience team can be contacted on 9462 4901.

Thanks and kind regards

Janet Jones
