I chose to birth at the Family Birth Centre early in 2021. I believe patient-centred services such as this should be more available to low-risk women.
I felt supported with my birth plan and trusted my midwife Amanda who went above and beyond. In my opinion, normal physiological birth for low-risk women should be promoted as it reduces the risk for medical intervention. I had to research this option myself and I believe pregnant women should be offered these services at the GP.
My experience and delivery was amazing. I felt trusted to listen to my body and knew that I could be transferred to the main hospital if needed. Amanda was excellent during my birth and I can not thank her enough. When building the new women's and babies hospital I believe the FBC should remain and be expanded.
I also accessed the lactation consultants and women's health physio post-birth. In my experience, both services were amazing and a prompt visit from both meant I was able to get support for my issues early and prevent longer-term issues. In my opinion, these services also deserve further funding as I believe I would have been struggling further if I could not access these.
