"Service access and support"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Breastfeeding Centre of WA King Edward Memorial Hospital / Family Birth Centre

(as the patient),

I chose to birth at the Family Birth Centre early in 2021. I believe patient-centred services such as this should be more available to low-risk women.

I felt supported with my birth plan and trusted my midwife Amanda who went above and beyond. In my opinion, normal physiological birth for low-risk women should be promoted as it reduces the risk for medical intervention. I had to research this option myself and I believe pregnant women should be offered these services at the GP.

My experience and delivery was amazing. I felt trusted to listen to my body and knew that I could be transferred to the main hospital if needed. Amanda was excellent during my birth and I can not thank her enough. When building the new women's and babies hospital I believe the FBC should remain and be expanded.

I also accessed the lactation consultants and women's health physio post-birth. In my experience, both services were amazing and a prompt visit from both meant I was able to get support for my issues early and prevent longer-term issues. In my opinion, these services also deserve further funding as I believe I would have been struggling further if I could not access these.

Dear guideqn55,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS), and specifically the Family Birth Centre (FBC). Congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your new baby.

We greatly appreciate your suggestion as WNHS relies on this type of feedback so that we can continually review, improve and grow our service. Feedback such as yours will certainly help us understand the preferences of our patients and their families during their care journey and will allow for us to support these preferences during the design stages for the new WNHS hospital on the QEII site. It is our aim to provide the best support and patient-centred care for women and their families.

I’m so pleased to hear that your delivery went well and that your experience with our Breastfeeding Centre and Physio Service was such a positive one. It is great to hear that you were supported not only during your birth, but also post-birth, and that our staff were able to help you to achieve the best possible outcomes. I will be sure to let Amanda and the rest of the FBC team know of your great feedback.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experience and suggestions. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards

Jodi Graham
