"Knee injury"

About: Kununurra Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Taken to Kununurra ED by St Johns ambulance with painful knee injury. Care in ED was good. Sent home with crutches, pain relief and splint.

Two days later had to return for ultrasound. All information had to be repeated. Apparently no record in the system. Waited two hours to be told ultrasound results can take up to five days so not sure why I was told to go back to ED immediately after the ultrasound. Saw nurse practitioner who was good.

I felt there was poor continuity and believe the record system needs a review.

Hi couragetx58,

My name is Keda Bond and I am the Operations Manager of Kununurra Hospital. I am really sorry to hear that you injured your knee and that your experience was further impacted by your treatment at Kununurra Hospital. I hope you have since received your results and potentially followed up with the amazing GP service in town who will be able to assist you further.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to give us some feedback and very much appreciate that you have provided us with the areas our staff have provided good care; both in ED and with the Nurse Practitioner, and where we have the opportunity for improvement.

Medical Imaging results such as ultrasounds have to be assessed and reported on by the relevant specialist and this can take anywhere between 2 hours and 5 days and is largely dependent on the severity of the injury. There is often an assumption made by our staff that patients know that there is a longer turnaround for reporting on things like ultrasounds at remote sites such as ours and we recognise that the communications around your waiting for results could have been better.

Patient notes and record of presentations are taken at the time the patient arrives and a band should have been provided to you on each occasion which is best practice and in line with standards, if this did not occur I would like to know as it poses a risk to patient safety.

In order to undertake a full review, we need to assess your specific presentation. If you would like us to look into it further, please contact me directly on 0408 944 305.

Thank-you again for your time.

Keda Bond
